What’s New in 2026?
As of January 15, 2026, IRCC has frozen the list of eligible fields of study. This provides much-needed certainty for students currently enrolled in programs across Canada.
- Field of Study Requirement: If you are graduating from a college diploma or certificate program, your field of study must align with Canada’s long-term labor shortages (STEM, Healthcare, Trades, Agriculture, etc.).
- Degree Holders are Exempt: Graduates with a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degree remain eligible for a PGWP regardless of their field of study.
- Language Proficiency: All applicants must now provide valid language test results (IELTS, CELPIP, PTE Core, TEF, or TCF).
Continuous Full-Time Study
You must have maintained full-time student status in Canada during each semester of your program (except the final semester).
Program Length
Your program must be at least 8 months (900 hours in Quebec).
Eligible Institution
You must graduate from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) with a PGWP-eligible program.
Application Timeline
You have 180 days from the date you receive your final marks or completion letter to apply.
PGWP Validity Period
- Programs 8 months: Not eligible.
- Programs 8 months to 2 years: Valid for the same length as your study program.
- Master’s Degrees: Eligible for a 3-year PGWP, even if the program was less than 2 years.
- Programs 2 years or more: Eligible for a 3-year PGWP.
